Danfoss Burner Components Guide: Ignition Units, Fuel Pumps and Nozzles Explained

Reliable burner operation depends on several components performing different but connected functions. The fuel pump supplies oil under pressure, the nozzle atomises the fuel, and the ignition unit produces the spark needed to begin combustion.

Danfoss manufactures components for these stages of the burner system. However, buyers must select each component using its complete specification. Matching only the brand name or general product family can result in the wrong rotation, output, pressure range or electrical configuration.

Danfoss EBI4 Ignition Units

The Danfoss EBI4 series consists of compact electronic ignition units designed for selected small and medium-sized oil and gas burners.

Depending on the model, an EBI4 can provide one-pole or two-pole ignition. The range includes standard intermittent-duty units, continuous-ignition C-series models and higher-output HP versions.

What to check before selecting an EBI4

Verify:

  • Burner make and model

Two EBI4 units may look similar but have different output or duty-cycle specifications.

Danfoss BFP Fuel Pumps

A Danfoss BFP pump draws oil from the storage tank, increases its pressure and supplies it to the burner nozzle. Selected BFP models also incorporate a solenoid valve for fuel cut-off.

The model code can identify characteristics such as:

  • Capacity

  • Nozzle or pressure-outlet position

The rotation and nozzle position must be determined while viewing the pump from the shaft end.

Record:

  9. Fuel type and viscosity

A pump should not be replaced based only on its shape or connection size.

Danfoss Oil Burner Nozzles

The oil burner nozzle converts pressurised fuel into a controlled spray. Its capacity, spray angle and spray pattern affect flame formation and combustion performance.

A nozzle designation normally includes:

  • Flow capacity

  • Spray angle

  • Spray pattern

  • Series or application information

A higher-capacity nozzle does not automatically improve burner output. Pump pressure, combustion-air adjustment, burner-head design and firing-rate requirements must be considered together.

How the Components Work Together

A typical startup sequence is:

  1. The burner control initiates startup.

  2. The burner motor starts.

  3. The fuel pump draws oil and builds pressure.

  4. The EBI4 ignition unit creates a spark.

  5. The nozzle releases atomised fuel.

  6. The fuel-air mixture ignites.

  7. The flame sensor confirms combustion.

  8. The control permits continued burner operation.

If the burner fails to start, the visible symptom does not always identify the defective component. Low fuel pressure, a blocked nozzle, an incorrect electrode gap or a weak spark can produce similar startup problems.
